scent hour: smoke

Perfumery began with smoke, with aromatic materials transformed through fire and offered to the air, to spirit. In contemporary botanical perfumery, depth through smoke comes from resins, woods, roots, and leaves that hold the memory of fire within their chemistry. Smoke evokes release, depth, warmth, ritual. It is a reminder that matter was transformed. 

As the season turns and light wanes, we’ll gather with the smell of smoke. During this hour we’ll share memories while exploring a selection of botanical extractions, noticing how each expresses smoke and brings complexity in its own unique way. I’ll also share a few of my own compositions that feature smoke, two of which were inspired by cities where smoke drifts through the air, becoming part of the place’s essence.

There will be tea to savor as we smell, and a bottled scent to carry the memory of smoke home with you.
